| I t wasn’t often Jake chose to meet Bella after school, she hated to be the centre of attention, and whenever Jake did turn up all eyes were on the two of them. This was of course due to a number of reasons, but mainly down the Bella’s change of heart from Edward to Jacob. Of course, many of them had met Jake briefly when the bloodsucker had left town, but none of them really knew him…or anyone from the reservation for that matter. Sure the kids in Forks would head down to First Beach, which always got the attention of the reservation kids, but none of them really ever actually mingled outside of that. Bella and Jacob had always been the exception to this rule, finding time to hang out – though usually on the res. He pulled up slowly in the parking lot outside the big school building. It was far bigger than the one in La Push – even though the population of Forks wasn’t exactly massive itself. Jacob glanced around at all the cars, he’d been told the Cullen’s hadn’t yet appeared at school…but he wanted to be sure it was safe before turning the engine off. All the cars had the same feel and look to them, which meant the coast was clear. Nothing new and shiny in sight. He relaxed a little, kicking the stand out and letting his bike rest to one side. There were a few kids out of class already, but he knew Bella wouldn’t be out for a while. He frowned a little, watching everyone rush around and chat away – in complete bubbles, no idea of what the outside world was really like. He lost himself in thought, it had been months since Jake had been to school – Billy had chosen not to bother sending him anymore. He was a good mechanic, he was bright and he had enough on his plate as it was. There was a part of him – deep down – that missed being in a school community. The reality was it just wasn’t suitable. If anyone lost their temper at a teacher or another student, it spelt out trouble all over. Though, with kids in the res phasing younger and younger, things were going to start causing problems anyway. It was really getting hard to keep the tribes secret. Folding his arms across his chest, Jacob people-watched with intrigue. Plenty of people had noticed him by now and were shooting curious looks in his direction. In all fairness, he stood out like a sore thumb. He stood at 6ft 4” which to anyone would look out of place, but on top of that – over his months of phasing and living in hiatus – he had filled out physically, his broad shoulders and chest were enough to intimidate any normal man. All this, and he was only 16 years old. A small grin spread across his face, this was far too much fun. As more and more people stared, he started to recognise familiar faces – some of the kids he’d met through Bella were keeping their distance, probably unsure of what to make of his growth spurt. One in particular stood out – Mike Newton – the dweeb that had tagged along with him and Bella to the cinema. Jacobs grin widened, a wicked glint in his eye…he had a bit of time to kill after all. |

All this bad blood here, WON'T YOU LET IT DRY?
The minutes ticked by so slowly. Last period of the day always dragged ridiculously slowly, and today was no different. There was absolutely no way that Mike could listen to the drone of the teachers’ voice, talking about some tedious, irrelevant thing that would never ever come in hand after he left high school. Mike’s thoughts were firmly elsewhere; nothing new there really. He found himself wondering whether or not he should ask Bella out again. Technically, at the moment, he was single. He and Jess were ‘taking a break’ from a relationship, because… well he didn’t actually know. But she had suggested it after yet another argument they had had. So he could ask Bella out, if he really wanted. With Cullen finally out of the picture, it meant that Mike actually had a shot now. Right? He was pulled out of his train of thought by the small mousy girl sat next to him; Tammy, asking him to clarify something about what was just said. Mike answered with a grumble of an ‘I dunno’ and busied himself with copying notes off of the chalkboard.
Finally, after what felt like forever, the final bell signalled the end of the day and the students made quick work of filtering out of the classrooms and into the now crowded hall. Mike followed the stream of chatty students and soon found himself being engulfed in a overly rough headlock from one of his best friends, Ben. The pair tousled a little until the sound of a teacher’s voice approaching separated them, both laughing mockingly at each other. Mike had grown up with Ben, amongst the rest of his year since he’d moved from California when he was eight years old. It was a small town where everyone knows everyone’s business, and everyone was generally friends with everyone because of family histories. It had been strange to adjust after moving from a big city, but now, Mike loved it here in Forks.
The pair chatted about various things as they made their ways to their lockers to exchange books and pick up personal items that had been stored there throughout the day. It wasn’t too long though before Ben started on about some cheesy date that he was planning on taking Angela on. That couple had gotten together the same time that Mike had started dating Jess; only they had lasted much longer than them. There was a time where Mike would suggest a double date; making Jessica think that he’d put a lot of thought into a date, when in reality he’d just hijacked another couples date. For a moment, Mike missed those early days of dating Jess. They were fun and easy. Now she was just so demanding and clingy. As his thoughts drifted to dates, his eyes automatically scanned the hall for the one girl who he was interested in dating; Bella.
The crowd had thinned now, kids hurrying off home or to part time jobs, yet Bella was nowhere to be seen. Mike told himself he’d ask her out the next time he saw her, without fail. Calling a quick see ya later to Ben, Mike slammed his locker shut and made his way out into the parking lot towards his silver Neon Dodge. Automatically he began to look to see if Bella’s truck was still in the parking lott, but that wasn’t what he noticed. A big shiny motor cycle with an even bigger guy leaning against it is what he noticed. Immediately he recognised him as Jacob – the kid that Bella had brought to the movies that one time, only he looked a lot bigger now. Steroids, Mike told himself, must be steroids. And of course, he was parked right by the Dodge. Mike made his way in that direction, immediately holding himself tall. ”Hey, your Jacob right? Nice bike,”

| I t wasn’t that Jake went out of his way to annoy people, but winding people up was just so much fun. Especially where Mike Newton was concerned. Jake thought back to before, when they’d gone to the movies as per Bella’s request. The guy had been such a marshmallow, it had been funny. Jake let a sly smile spread across his face, he wondered if the guy thought he stood a chance with Bella now that the news of the Edward/Bella break-up had spread. Rumour was, thanks to Charlie’s gossiping with Billy, there had been some dramatic showdown between the two…though that wasn’t entirely true. It fascinated him how quickly talk spread around Forks, but then again…nothing really happened in this small town so he couldn’t really blame anyone. Jacob observed the crowd, noticing the look of concern and intrigue on faces as they past. He must have looked like trouble, even teachers were poking their heads out of the building to make sure nothing was kicking off. He snorted a little, did no one trust him? Jacob wasn’t exactly the scariest thing to walk the streets of Forks - how was it that no one noticed the Cullen’s and how dangerous they were. People of this town seemed to accept them, but an oversized kid from the res? Naw, he was bad news. It would always make him laugh how different the people of Forks were to the elders on the res. If only they knew the kind of monsters that lurked in the shadows. Now he understood why Bella didn’t like him picking her up after school - but he'd dropped her off that morning and without a truck, Jake wasn’t keen on letting her hitch a ride home from anyone else. Especially not anyone he knew of. As the Newton kid approached, Jacob noticed him straighten up a bit - an attempt to make himself look bigger no doubt. Unfortunately for him, Jake stood at a solid 6ft7” these days, and he was sure there was still some growth going on…the wolf gene hadn’t quite stopped yet. “Newton, right?” His expression was amused, as if the guy didn’t know who Jake was. It was bound to be etched onto his brain after that movie night out, Jake had made it obvious to the guy then that he hadn’t stood a chance with Bells. “Thanks, I fixed it up myself…” he nodded his grin spreading wider - that was sure to deflate the little guy a bit, after all…he didn’t look like the mechanic type himself. Glancing over Mike’s head, Jake ignored the stares coming from various students in the parking lot and tried to pinpoint Bella in the crowd. Luckily, she wasn’t anywhere to be seen…that meant he had a bit more time to mess with Mike. He’d been so serious lately, running to boarder on a regular basis, he needed a bit of fun. “So Mike, what’s new with you?” He felt like starting the conversation casually, hoping to coax things out of Mike slowly. It was much more fun to watch him squirm that way. He cocked his head to one side, “I guess you heard about the big break-up…it’s all over town,” raising one eyebrow inquisitively, Jacob waited for his reaction. |
