| I t was midday and Jake had just finished his ‘shift’ running the border once again. Feeling a wave of tiredness wash over him, Jacob rubbed his eyes and yawned. It had been a long week, and he couldn’t wait to grab some food, watch some T.V. and sleep…in that order. Bella wasn’t due to come over for a few hours, he could get some much needed kip in before spending time with her, wanting to be sure that she got nothing but his undivided attention. Entering the small, rustic home Jake let out a deep sigh. He loved coming home, it was just what the doctor ordered sometimes. Everything about it felt comfortable, the familiar surroundings made him relax and allowed him to almost forget all the drama going on elsewhere in his life. There was a time Jake hated drama, but now it seemed to follow him like the bad, bloodsucker smell he couldn’t get out of his nose.
Crashing down onto the small sofa in front of the T.V. Jake picked up the remote and flicked through the channels, trying to find something of vague interest. He came across a show about rebuilding a Mustang - that’s what he liked. Vacantly he looked over to the door that went out to the garage, it had been a long time since he’d been in there and worked on anything remotely mechanic. Making a mental note, Jacob settled back and figured he’d find a new project soon - something Bella could help him with. He let out another big yawn and slouched down into the sofa, it wasn’t like Jake to be lazy but for a change he wanted nothing more than to just be alone. Going to see anyone, Seth…Sam…they were likely to rile him up, get him agitated, it was always the way. He felt exhausted just thinking about it. Grabbing his cell out of his pocket, he checked his messages…Billy, Sam, Paul…no one he actually wanted to talk to right now. He knew his Dad was over with Sue Clearwater, trying (and probably failing) to help sort through Harry’s old stuff. Jake shook his head, he wasn’t in the mood to go and help right now. |

I t had been four years since Rachel had been on the La Push reservation, her childhood home. Her twin sister had gotten married as soon as the two had graduated high school and then moved to Hawaii. In those four years, she had managed to upgrade her car a tad. A small smile appeared across her lips as she imagined Jacob's face upon seeing her new ride. It was a bright colored blue 2002 Mazda 626 and she loved it dearly. Rachel had made the decision to come back home because the timing of everything waa just too perfect to ignore. She had just graduated and was in that weird limbo stage of waiting on the perfect job and losing her apartment because she couldn't pay the bills with her current (now freshly lost) minimum wage job. Her family also needed her as well because of the very recent lose of Harry Clearwater. Rachel drove past the Forks sign and continued on her way through town in order to get to La Push. Her father would need her and something told her that Jacob did too.
Neither of them knew that she was coming. It would be a complete surprise for the whole tribe, not just her family. Rachel knew she would be welcomed back with open arms. She smiled again but it soon faded as she turned into the road that led to the La Push reservation. There were many memories here, both good ones and sad ones. She remembered her mother's laugh and how Sarah would chase her two daughters into the waves on the beach and then scoop them up for hugs and tickles. She remembered her father smiling more, laughing more, and being happier with life. Little Jacob hardly had a chance to know her. A single tear slipped past her defenses and slowly slid down her cheek. Rachel adjusted her grip on the wheel to wipe it away. Today would be a happy day and not a sad one.
Rachel pulled into the Black driveway. She was finally home! Rachel got out of her car, grabbed her bookbag and her one suitcase. She walked up to the door and opened it without knocking. Rachel immediately saw that nothing had changed since her absence and that Billy wasn't home. She'd expected this because Sue probably had needed help clearing out Harry's things and keeping Leah and Seth reined in. She had not been expecting her little brother to be on the couch looking almost ready to pass out. He was also much much bigger than she remembered. With a grin on her face, she spoke, "Geez, Jake, lay off the steroids!"

| J acob hadn’t really been paying attention to anything going on around him. His thoughts were on the car being rebuilt on T.V. which meant his guard was completely down. That was the problem with being at home, he felt completely at ease. He didn’t even hear the car approach the small, humble abode…let alone hear anyone get out of it. The truth was, Jake hadn’t been expecting visitors just yet - Bella was still at school and the guys were still avoiding him a little after he’d made the decision to go rogue Alpha on his own. The decision still made him flinch a bit, but ultimately he felt much better this way, happier. Not being controlled by Sam was a huge weight off his shoulders. It was only the small voice that drew his attention away from the T.V. and made him jump up, stunned to have been caught so off-guard. At the door, his sister Rachel stood with her bags…somewhat unexpected. “Jeez Rach, a little notice would have been nice,” he choked, feeling his chest to make sure he was still alive and well. Jacob shook his head in disbelief before moving over to meet his sister, wrapping his big arms around her tiny frame. It had been so long, he didn’t realise quite how much he towered above her now. “No steroids here, just filling out,” he beamed, unsure whether or not to tell her the truth about his sudden change in physical appearance. Grabbing her bags, he moved to place them out of the way before taking a seat back on the couch - turning the volume down on the T.V. with a little bit of a disgruntled feeling that he’d miss the rebuild. “What’s bought you back to La Push lil sis?” he said mockingly, obviously Rachel was older than him…but given his build, it felt right to tease her slightly about being so small. Rachel and Rebecca were the best sisters Jake could have asked for, taking over the mom role when his own mother unfortunately passed…he didn’t remember her enough to be too upset about it, but he had been grateful of his sisters support. As had Billy. “We’ve missed you, have you heard from Becks much?”It had been a strange childhood for him, no-one really understood the ins and outs…Charlie was probably the only person in the world who had been there through it all. Hence the reason why he and Billy had always been so close. With everything going on, Jake felt slightly anxious about Rachel being back in town. He was really going to have to control himself, or at least until he’d figured out what exactly to say. |

R achel could tell that she had caught her little brother off guard given his reaction. She rolled her eyes slightly, "I know I should have. But I really wanted it to be a surprise!" For a second she was slightly intimidated by Jacob's extremely fast response as well as his massive size. But this was Jacob after all. Rachel relaxed immediately, right before her now much larger younger brother wrapped his arms around her for what could only be described as a big bear hug. She relaxed even further, knowing absolutely certain that she would be welcomed this way by everyone else in the tribe. Plus the warmth that Jacob emanated from his body was incredibly comfortable but also slightly alarming. As Jake took her bags from her, she asked gently, "Are you feeling ok, Jake? Spent too much time in the sun? You can't have a fever because you look fine... you know what, it's none of my business. You don't have to tell me, of course."
Rachel quickly dismissed her brother's body heat and followed him to the couch where she sat next to him, wasting no time in getting comfortable. She sighed softly as the question of what was she doing here came up. That was a loaded question with many answers but for now, Rachel would give the easiest one, "I heard about Harry and I wanted to see if there was any way I could help Dad and the Clearwaters. And of course spend some quality time with my little brother. Rachel grinned easily as she teased Jacob just as he'd teased her, this is pretty much how their relationship had always been. Once the dust settled down a bit, she'd tell Jake the other reasons why she was here. Not around their dad though, Billy would only worry and offer her to stay with them forever. Which was something that Rachel could never do.
"Becca's doing great! It's been a couple weeks since I talked with her but she's still madly in love and loves her job. She was the one to tell me to surprise you two! How are the Clearwaters really doing? And I bet Charlie isn't taking the news very well, is He? Dad's probably distraught by it!" Rachel rambled slightly. It was slightly easier being back here than she thought it would be but she'd also only been back for 5 minutes and hadn't seen her dad yet.

| J acob let a big grin spread across his face, he was happy to see her again…especially now he’d recovered from his momentary heart attack. She was so petite, and when it really boiled down…she was his favourite. The siblings had always been close, but with Rebecca moving away and settling down, it had left Jake and Rachel to become closer. Although, the secret he was currently keeping wasn’t going to go down well at all, after all…she was bound to find out. A pang of anxiety ran through him, he was worried about her reaction a little – Bella had jumped to conclusions but with her history of ‘monsters’ she’d accepted the weirdness fairly easily. Jake shook his head, his grin dropping ever so slightly, “I’m good…just a guy thing I think.” Silently, Jake prayed that his ever-so-observant sister hadn’t noticed the look on his face, the one that made it obvious he was lying. Following her movements with his eyes, he settled a bit as she got comfortable. Having to act normal, like the old Jacob, was going to be a lot harder than he thought. He glared at her response, not buying a second of it. “O-kay…and now for the truth?” Shooting her a quick, warm smile Jake waited patiently. It wasn’t like her to be holding anything back – and as much as he wanted to believe she was there for quality family time, it just didn’t sound right. “Good to hear about Becks, I wonder if she’ll spring a surprise visit on us too…” he winked, Rebecca didn’t always stay in touch – not that he could blame her. She was free from the res and everything that held Jake here…luckily she’d not inherited the family gene. Out of all of them, Jake had pulled the short straw there, and the worst part was…he couldn’t confide in anyone, they wouldn’t truly understand. “Leah and Seth are…um…coping, in their own way,” he cringed, the siblings had both phased when the news of their father’s death had reached them, he was still trying to help them understand what they were. “Charlie has been down here a lot, with Bella…” he didn’t know whether to drop the bombshell or not…it was probably safer not to. “Put it this way, Billy…I mean Dad will be glad you’re here,” ever since he’d first phased he’d been calling his dad by his first name. A small habit he’d picked up when he’d been too angry to control anything…in a way he’d sort of blamed Billy for not telling him the legend sooner…or at least what it actually meant. He glanced over at the kitchen, his stomach involuntarily grumbling as he did. “I’m starved, you fancy something?” Jake wasn’t the best chef, but he could make a tonne of mac and cheese…usually eating the whole lot himself. This time, he’d share – plus if he did consume such a large amount Rachel might get a little bit suspicious. |

A fter Rachel had gotten comfortable on the couch, she stared at Jake's very poor explanation as to why he radiated the heat of the sun from his body without having a fever, "Uh huh, sure, guy thing." She would be the cool big sister and let him explain in his own time. After all, they all had their secrets. If Rachel hadn't just gotten back home, she probably would have been more annoyed that Jake wasn't telling her what was going on. Then her little brother picked up on the fact that she, herself, wasn't telling the whole truth about why she was here. What did he want to know, that she had failed at living on her own? That she wasn't making enough money to support herself and was now stuck with a degree she couldn't use and thousands of dollars in debt? Of course her father and brother would love her no matter what but what was here on the reservation? What was available to her to give back without being a burden?
"It's complicated Jake. And no, it's because I broke up with some silly boy." Rachel laughed, trying to divert the attention away from herself. Apparently the two siblings were keeping secrets from one another and weren't as close as either of them thought. Rachel knew that those secrets wouldn't stay hidden for long but she needed to process them herself for a while first. Plus, dealing with a failure as a daughter was the last thing Billy needed. Rachel laughed again, "Oh come on, we both know Becks is not gonna leave Hawaii to come back here. All that sunshine! At least she's happy."
The good humor and joking put aside for a few moments, Rachel saw Jake cringe at the mention of Seth and Leah. It must have been taking it's toll much worse than she could have imagined. Rachel understood that pain of losing a parent more than Jake did. She made a mental note to check on Leah personally at a later time before she left the reservation. When Jake explained that Charlie was coming down with Bella a lot, Rachel caught the way he said it. She gave a small smile, aww, her little brother had a crush. It would be great to see Bella again, she used to be very close until Bella stopped coming to Forks over the summers. Rachel also didn't miss the fact that Jake said their father's first name. She raised one eyebrow but decided not to ask any questions about any of the new information that Jacob was throwing at her in just a few sentences. But she couldn't resist at least one, curiosity killed the cat after all, "So What does Bella do when she is here, she must like it here beings she's coming over so much."
At the sound of her brother's grumbling stomach, Rachel laughed, "At least some things never change! Mac and cheese sounds amazing right now! We should make Dad's favorite dinner before he gets home. Need any help?"

| I t was sure as hell going to be hard for Jake to keep his secret if Rach was so sure of staying – after all, he was now part of the elder meetings, and included a great deal in the way La Push was running. He was sure, like so many, Rach was going to be convinced of some gang culture in the small reservation. It had taken him long enough to convince Bella otherwise, and Bella hadn’t been around all that much at the start. Rachel was no doubt going to pick up on it sooner rather than later. “Hey, it is…kind of,” his attempt to argue back was feeble and he shot an apologetic glance toward his sister. Lying to her didn’t come natural to him, he hated it and the feeling made him uncomfortable. Jake frowned, “so there isn’t some goofball out there that I have to go and set straight?” He eyed her suspiciously, so this was the reality. They were both lying to each other, keeping secrets well and truly hidden. Not for long though, Jake was going to wiggle it out of her somehow. “If you don’t spill, I’ll have to tell Bi-I mean Dad that you’re hiding something.” He grinned wickedly at his sister, knowing full well she would rather tell Jacob now than have to explain things to their dad later. Besides, nothing was going to be as bad as Jake’s new way of life, shifting into a wolf wasn’t exactly easy to accept let alone explain. His expression turned thoughtful and Jacob nodded, “Becks was clever, that’s for sure.” It wasn’t easy for him to deal with the fact he was tied to this life. Both Rachel and Rebecca had a choice, they could leave with no strings attached…no matter when Jacob went his new life would follow him. He was kind of jealous that his siblings were both so free, able to follow any dream and do whatever they wanted. Not that he was envious of the sun or the heat, the weather barely affected him these days. “Still, I know a visit would be welcome…by everyone,” it had been a while since they’d seen her, and Billy was sure as hell missing the girls. Jake couldn’t commit to being around when he was needed anymore, he had other duties. Although Billy didn’t complain, Jake felt he was lonely. Watching Rachel carefully, he noted her expression. She was clearly worried, and Jacob wanted to be sure his sister didn’t put herself in the way of danger. Both Leah and Seth weren’t in control, and the last thing anyone wanted was a casualty on their hands. “They just need some time, space to process things,” his voice was harder than he intended, full of warning. Werewolves weren’t great company to keep, Emily was evidence of that, but he couldn’t exactly tell Rachel this. Not yet anyway. Jake noticed her face change, this news of Bella had caught her interest more than he’d hoped…how to explain the imprinting without giving too much away. He sighed, dating was probably the best way to cover it – after all Bella was going to be around a lot. “She…well, hangs out with me. I guess, well…we’re kind of dating,” which was the truth, in a roundabout way, “it’s complicated,” Rachel was going to probe anyway. He waited for the onslaught of questions. “Mac and Cheese coming up!” A wide grin spread across Jakes face, and he manoeuvred gracefully off the couch and into the kitchen in one swift movement. “Trying to butter him up, are we?” Shooting his sister a sly look, Jake laughed. He grabbed a saucepan out…and then picked up another. This was going to have to be a big batch, “grab me two packs of the pasta out,” he mumbled whilst rifling through the cupboard for the sauce. It was nice, feeling normal for a moment, being with his sister again. Sure, that was all bound to change when she discovered the truth. He held out his hand, waiting for the packets of pasta to be placed in his grasp. |

R achel was going to make a somewhat annoying comeback to the fact that Jake was still trying to pawn off his feverish body heat when her brother's next question make her look away from him uncomfortably, with a slight blush on her face. The young woman took a small breath, still not looking at Jacob, "No, Jake. There isn't some goofball, there kind of hasn't been anyone. I don't know why though..." That truth stung slightly. Everyone said that you were supposed to meet your significant other during your college years. Yet, Rachel hadn't met anyone. Not even a single person had been interested in her. She knew it definitely wasn't because of her looks. In all honesty, Rachel was at one of the lowest points in her entire life. So low that she had gladly come back to a place of known pain over trying to make it work elsewhere.Rachel finally looked at her brother, a slight worried look on her face that was already showing hurt, "Jake, please don't tell Dad. He has enough to worry about. So do you. I'll tell you when I'm ready. I'm just not right now." Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke but she used the force of will to keep them from spilling. "You know, I miss Becks too. And yea she was the clever one." The switch in conversation helped Rachel to compose herself again and go back to being herself a bit. "I'll go check on Leah in the next few days. It has to be do hard! Especially with Sam getting engaged to Emily too. Poor girl." Rachel knew exactly how it felt to lose a parent suddenly but Leah must have it so much worse with the whole Sam thing. Jacob's revelation of him dating Bella brought a smile to her face once more, "It's complicated but I can see how you're acting just by you talking about her. Does she like it here? What's you're guys favorite thing to do? How is the Rabbit coming along? Does she like the mechanical living side of you?"After playing a short game of twenty questions, Rachel laughed, "I don't need to butter him up, Jake! I'm gonna be lucky if he don't go into shock when he sees me." The young woman opened the pantry and found the pasta easily enough. Then she handed her little brother two packages, thinking that he must be expecting Bella and Charlie over for that much pasta to be made.

| J ake watched his sisters reaction with curiosity, she seemed to be a bit stand-offish and uncomfortable which wasn’t like Rachel AT ALL. He frowned, narrowing his eyes slightly – the twins were pretty, he’d always been aware there’d be a time where he’d have to play protective brother. With Rebecca, he’d been too young when she’d gotten married so he’d not had the chance. So it seemed strange to him that, after all this time, Rachel hadn’t yet found someone. She sounded almost hurt by the fact, “Rach…” he started, before pausing to collect his thoughts. “Any guy would be lucky to have you, heck you’re easier to be around than Becks. Clearly you’ve been hanging around with the wrong people,” he shot her a small smile, really wanting to comfort her with a Jake-style bear hug. Though he was now extremely wary of the fact he ran so much hotter than she did, and for some reason his sister had decided today of all days to become observant. His brows furrowed at her response, and he held his hands up defensively, “Rach, jeez, relax…I won’t tell Billy, but you need to tell me what’s going on sooner rather than later…he’s a lot more observant these days and you’ll be surprised how quickly he’ll notice. If you want a cover, I’m probably the better person to handle it…” Jake cringed a little, Billy was far too observant and it drove him mad – his dad had watched him like a hawk, though a little less so now. He nodded absent-mindedly at her comment on Becks, not really paying attention too much, more worried about what had Rach so worked up. It was only her comment to go and see Leah that snapped him out of it, “trust me Rach, that isn’t a good idea.” He glanced over at her, suddenly worried about saying too much, “it’s…hard to explain, but please take my word on this.” Jake’s voice was hard, forceful even, the alpha in him coming out ever so slightly…he’d sounded like Sam, and that made him shudder. Rolling his eyes at her onslaught of twenty questions, Jake took a deep breath and glowered at her. “Of course she likes coming here, but we just hang out either here, in the garage or at the beach…the Rabbit is long finished, I guess she doesn’t mind the mechanics though…” he thought for a moment, “I haven’t really done much by the way of mechanics recently.” Jake frowned a little, that was a part of life he really did miss. “You definitely need to butter him up, especially if you’re planning to send him into a state of shock and keeping secrets from us both.” Jake grinned, taking the pasta from his sister and shoving it into the pan – contemplating if it’d be enough for the three of them. “He’ll be home late, Sam usually brings him back before heading to Emily’s…we’ll save him some though.” He glanced at the clock, wondering how late his dad would be tonight. They were all trying to help Seth and Leah, the way they’d helped Jake…which had always meant late nights and early starts. |
