~Don't be afraid to love~
My life is amazing.
Esme hummed happily as she worked in the kitchen. Music drifted peacefully through the house as raindrops pattered against the many windows. Though it was cold and wet outside, inside the house was warm and inviting. Esme smiled as she popped a full baking sheet into the oven. Flour covered her hands and there was a smudge of it on her cheek. She was busy making a batch of her popular Frisbee-sized cinnamon rolls. As she chopped pecans and mixed them into the cinnamon-sugar filling, her mind momentarily wandered.
I really am living happily ever after. Despite everything...I did get my wish.
She could never have imagined the life she was living now, not in her wildest, fondest dreams. The darkness of her previous life had been banished by the amazing changes her new life had brought. She had a wonderful, loving family that she'd do anything to protect. She had her true love. She was immortal and gifted with supernatural abilities. It was truly incredible.
Of course, it hadn't all been easy. After she had been saved by Carlisle and become a vampire, it had been almost impossible to resist the call of human blood. Without Carlisle to guide and teach her, Esme knew it would have overwhelmed her and she would have become a monster. But Carlisle had showed her a better way to live, where they valued human life and only hunted wildlife. But even then they were merciful in their kills and only hunted when it was needed.
The chime of the oven timer called Esme back from her reverie. She opened the oven and pulled out the pan, smiling as cinnamon and vanilla tantalized her nose. Even if she was no longer human, there was still pleasure to be derived from ordinary things. She transferred the rolls to a cooling rack and put another batch in the oven.
She paused for a moment, turning the crested ring on her hand; it belonged on a bigger finger than hers.
Carlisle, she thought. I owe you so much...
She was startled to hear a knock on the front door. She'd been so distracted, she hadn't heard anyone arrive. She wondered who it could be as she made her way downstairs and opened the door.

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY He had finally found them! After a week of searching, meeting who he believed to be the new love of his immortal life and the leader of something called a shifter wolf pack Jefferson had finally reached the town of Forks where if his sources of the towns people could be trusted told him that the family known as the Cullen's lived. Once he had this information the victorian, well dressed and insane vampire hopped into his yellow VW bug and drew off to the address he had been given. It took him a little bit of time to arrive at the location due to the Cullen's living near the outskirts of the town. He truly couldn't blame them wanting to be away from prying eyes considering that they were supposed to keep it a secret from the human population what they truly was. Once he pulled up in front of the rather impressive looking home the well dressed vampire just raised an eyebrow. "Nice place."Jefferson couldn't help but chuckle as his mind began to fog up just a bit and as the tick tock noise inside of his mind began to increase in volume as he became nervous about how this meeting could go. If it went sour the insane vampire knew for fact that he wouldn't be able to incapacitate the entire coven with his control over their sanity if they chose to attack him. He would just have to tread lightly. Jefferson hopped out of his car, placed his treasured top hat upon his head and walked up to the front door and gently knocked. It wasn't long until dark brunette vampire woman with brilliant golden eyes answered leading Jefferson to bow and remove his treasured hat for just a moment before carefully placing it back upon his head ever so softly. "Hello Madam, I'm Jefferson Frye and I was wondering if indeed this was the home of the Cullen family? I have come all the way from England to meet with them. The rumors of your rather different diet and..group dynamic have reached as far as my home. I wish to know more about both of these aspects due to meeting someone rather..special to me. May I have a few moments of your time?"As he spoke Jefferson let his Victorian English accent loose unlike how he usually tried to hide it while he was here in the United States. As he waited for the young looking vampire woman's answer he could feel and hear the ticking inside his mind grow louder as he thought of the aspect of family as if the very word was trying to break through the fog of insanity that seperated Jefferson's mind from thoughts of his past and what he lost. He had to try and keep his mind together if not for himself then for the thought of providing a nice life for Saxa. outfitHatEsme Anne Cullen

~Don't be afraid to love~
Esme absently brushed the flour off her cheek as she studied the visitor. His impeccable manners were impressive and his clothes, especially his hat, spoke of old English ties. He strangely reminded her of a character from Alice in Wonderland.
This is a surprise. A charming Victorian vampire, with eyes that are bright red. And yet, Esme thought, I sense there is a soul in there that has been through much.
Acknowledging his polite greeting, Esme curtsied slightly. Her mouth curved in a smile as her gold eyes met his crimson ones.
"Hello, Jefferson. This is our home. I'm Esme Cullen. It is a pleasure to meet you."
She looked up, noting that the rain was falling harder and an icy wind had started blowing. She stepped back to welcome him inside.
"Please, come in out of the rain! I was in the middle of baking some cinnamon rolls. If you'd like to come inside, I would be happy to talk with you."
Esme led the way back upstairs and smiled as the heady scent of the cinnamon rolls met them. Piano music drifted gently into the room from somewhere in the house. She put the cooling cinnamon rolls on a platter and began cleaning up the kitchen.
"I couldn't help but notice your accent. You must be from across the pond. England is lovely. Carlisle and I have friends there."
Esme finished washing the dishes and turned to look at Jefferson. Once again she had the sense that he had been through a lot, and much of it sad and painful. She hoped that whatever it was he wanted to know would give him a chance to have a better future, and she would help him if she could. She ushered Jefferson into the living room and sat on a couch by the fireplace, where a cozy fire burned brightly. She motioned to an easy chair across from her.
"Please, make yourself comfortable. Now, what would you like to know?"

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Jefferson couldn't help but raise his right eyebrow and tilt his head a bit to the right as the young and rather stunning looking golden eyed vampire answered the door. Despite him being a complete stranger and possibly hostile she greeted him with such warmth as if he had known her for years as a neighbor who just wanted to buy some sugar. When the woman named herself as Esme the English gentleman just tipped his hat to her out of respect and once she stepped aside to invite him into her home he gently stepped inside and removed his hat ever so gentle and tucked it under his left arm but couldn't help give her a look of confusion as she mentioned that she was baking. "If I may ask Mam'e, why are you baking cinnamon rolls when our kind no longer eats human food?"As lady Esme began to lead him through the stairs and up to her kitchen Jefferson couldn't help but notice the many historical objects that covered their walls such as what looked to be a large wooden cross like the one that the supposed human Jesus had to supposedly bare. Historical objects weren't the only things that covered the wall however as Jefferson noticed a large framed amount of what humans called graduation caps of different colors. If Jefferson had to guess how they were acquired it was by the younger looking family members going through their schooling over and over so that they could stay in an area longer. The concept was both dreadful and Brilliant at the same time. What truly caught Jefferson's eye though were the many family pictures around the area. Seeing such a happy looking family caused the ticking in his mind to grow louder and the fog of his insanity to grow thicker as if his mind was trying to keep him from thinking of who he lost. "You seem to be quite the happy family Mrs.Cullen. I must say that it is quite odd to see a coven of vampires to be so Jovial and so..human. I have not know this feeling since..for a long time."As the image of his dead wife and daughter poked through the fog of insanity as the two vampires stepped into the sweet smelling kitchen Jefferson couldn't help but chuckle under his breath as he tried to get a grip upon the insanity that had plagued him for over a century. As Jefferson watched Esme place the sweet baked goods on a platter he heard her mention his accent tipping her off that he was from "across the pond" as she put it and that she and her husband had friends there. Jefferson just nodded as he leaned in to sniff the baked goods gently. "Aye Mrs.Cullen. I have been maintaining my human parents home in Westminster England for over a century. I have a rather nice mansion rather close to Buckingham Palace. My father used to be the private train conductor for Queen Victoria and so we were set up in a rather nice home. I must say Mrs.Cullen your baked goods smell delicious. Eating food is one of the few human activities I do find myself missing from time to time along with a nice spot of tea."As Esme finished with the dishes and began to leading to the families living room Jefferson just followed her silently while trying to avoid looking at the family photo's because they were slowly causing his insanity to take hold of him and at it's current speed of growth it wouldn't be long until he began to lose himself. As Mrs.Cullen instructed him to sit he gently did so while resting his beloved hat in his lap. As she asked him what he would like to know he could no longer stop his insanity from making him chuckle a bit as his reason left him a bit. “The time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships - and sealing wax - of cabbages and kings” As Jefferson quoted the famous story that his daughter once loved his chuckling got a bit louder as the fog in his mind began to try and swallow his reason whole causing his hands to shake. To try and regain his senses Jefferson used his left hand to reach into his right inner coat pocket and pulled out his small metal flask filled with human blood. As he went to unscrew the cap however he managed to remember his hosts parculiar diet and did not wish to cause her discomfort. So while he chuckled and his hand shook causing his closed flask to fall to the floor he just looked toward his kind host while grinning an insane grin. "I wish to know more about your families life style and what brought it about but first mam'e may I trouble you for some animal blood if you happen to have some on tap as they say? I do not wish to make you uncomfortable by drinking human blood in a non-human blood home. I have a..condition you see brought on by my transformation."As he spoke Jefferson's chuckling took on a more sad and heartbroken tone. "I was tossed a little to close to the rabbit hole and fell down it hitting my head on the way down.Esme Anne Cullen

~Don't be afraid to love~
Esme sat across from Jefferson in the living room, her gold eyes keenly focused on him as he spoke.
There's something very wrong,Esme realized. This poor man in front of me has been through something terrible, I can sense it. I almost feel like, if I'm not careful, he might shatter into a thousand pieces.
As she overheard the excerpts he was quoting, the sense of despair and tragedy, along with pain and great loss grew stronger in Esme's mind. His obvious agony and torment made her heart ache, even if it no longer beat. She saw the flask fall from his hand and stood, certain now that something was dreadfully wrong.
“Of course, I always keep an emergency supply. One moment.”
Esme swept into the kitchen, moving even faster than usual, driven the knowledge that Jefferson needed help. She collected a blue wineglass and a specially-labeled dark-green bottle from the wine fridge. She then reappeared back in the living room, pouring a measured amount of liquid from the bottle into the wineglass and placing it into Jefferson's hands in a single fluid movement.
She stayed near him, knowing instinctively that he was going through something terrible. She never liked seeing people in pain or distraught. It reminded her painfully of how much Edward was hurting right now, how his heart had been shattered and his entire world torn apart. Somehow, she was going to help both of them, but right now she needed to focus on Jefferson. She hoped that the new diet Jefferson was asking to learn about would help his condition, but only time would tell.
For his sake,Esme mused, I truly hope it works.
Esme smiled encouragingly at Jefferson, motioning to the glass.
"“Sip it slowly, you're not accustomed to it yet. But it should help.”

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Jefferson just watched as Esme used her vampire speed to rush into her kitchen as he just continued to chuckle madly to himself. It wasn't long until Esme returned to his side and handed him a small wine glass of a different smelling kind of blood. The smell was indeed odd but not really unpleasant and so as she asked him to sip it slowly he just nodded and took a small slow sip so he could savior the flavor. It wasn't really that bad. It wasn't as full tasting as human blood but it indeed wasn't bad so after he swallowed the first sip he took another small chug and then took a deep breath out of habit and then smiled at Esme as the fog and ticking of his madness lessened and his reason returned to him. "You have my appreciation Mrs.Cullen. I apologize for you having to see me during one of my fits of insanity. It all started on the night I was changed. I am 146 years old and back before I joined this life I used to be a husband and a father. I lived in Westminster England near Buckingham Palace with my wife Emma and my daughter Samantha Grace. I was and still am an orderly and owner of an insane asylum. I use my vampiric gift of sanity manipulation to help my patients return to their right minds so they can rejoin their families. On my 24th and final birthday an African vampire broke into our home and..killed my wife and then my daughter in front of me before changing me."Jefferson found himself in need of taking a break from speaking as his free hand began to shake very slightly leading him to take another sip of the animal blood which he was actually beginning to enjoy quite highly. Once his glass was almost empty he looked back over at Esme with a calm expression as his hand stopped shaking. He knew that he should probably fill in the rest of the blanks of his story. "While I was being changed my only companions were the sound of a ticking grandfather clock, my treasured top hat that my daughter had given me earlier that day and the dead bodies of my family. As the transformation went on the ticking got louder and louder and a thick fog began to fill my mind as I was..as I was driven mad. The reason I quote Alice's adventures in Wonderland in my fits of madness is because it was my daughters favorite. She used to say I worked in Wonderland and helped all the mad people get better and that I was as mad as a hatter so she got me my hat. Once they were gone and my year as a newborn ended I returned to the asylum and took the name The Mad hatter of Westminster. She was only five years old."Once his story was ended Jefferson finished his animal blood and sat the glass down in front of him. He then took his hands and ran them down his face in a form of stress but then took another habit made deep breath before smiling at Esme. "Enough about me. Why not tell me about your family and why you are baking when our kind doesn't eat?"Esme Anne Cullencin

~Don't be afraid to love~
It's exactly what I sensed. He has been through something terrible.
Esme had sat silently as Jefferson told his story. Despite her instincts urging her to embrace him, to console and comfort him, she had remained still, knowing that he needed to get it all out. To interrupt would have been devastating and ruined any chance for healing. The whole story needed to be told before that could happen.
And what a story it was. Her heart broke for this man who sat in front of her. To have lost everything most dear to him in such a terrible way. She had felt admiration towards him for using his gifts to help people, burning anger towards the creature who had committed these heinous acts, and sorrow for the two innocent victims who had been so needlessly and callously slaughtered. Her own story paled in comparison to his. She felt so much sympathy for Jefferson. He truly had been put through an agonizing ordeal.
She had watched his hands shake, wanting to hold them and keep them still, but knew it would distract him. She also noticed that as he drank the animal blood, his nerves seemed to settle and he was able to push back the madness that threatened to overtake him. When he explained the references he had been quoting, Esme understood but also felt sad. His beloved daughter, source of so much joy to him, had been so cruelly taken away.
If that had been me...
Esme pushed away the thought of anything like that happening to her family. That was something she couldn't bear to imagine. She could, however, truly understand how Jefferson must have felt.
As Jefferson put down the empty glass, Esme sensed that he was feeling more stable and in control. She smiled at his query.
"Even though we can no longer really consume human food, I still find a sense of satisfaction in doing ordinary activities. I do, on occasion, get non-immortal visitors. It's rare, but it happens."
She settled back on the couch, smiling.
"As for my family, they are a wonderful gift that I could scarcely have imagined receiving. We consume animal blood to preserve human life. Carlisle taught us all about this lifestyle. He saved us. Carlisle is my husband. But he is so much more. He is also my true love. I met him once long ago, when I was a young girl. I had fallen out of a tree and gotten hurt. Carlisle happened to be the doctor who treated me. I liked him then, but he left. After many long years during which my life turned into darkness, he saved me when I would have died. I had nothing left to live for, or so I thought. Fate had a much different plan for me. Carlisle found me and gave me this life, his heart, and his love. I gave him mine without another thought. Finding myself with him again after all those years was a sign I could not ignore."
"My son Edward was already with Carlisle when I joined them. He is a wonderfully sweet, charming and gifted boy. He is what I had hoped my child could have been. Recently, his heart was broken, and he is in terrible pain. I am trying to help him, but he is struggling, I know. There has to be happiness in his future, I just know it."
"Rosalie and Emmett are two more of my children. Rosalie was saved by Carlisle and brought into our family. I know Carlisle had been concerned because Edward was alone, but they were happier as siblings. Rosalie found Emmett horribly injured and brought him to Carlisle, who gave him this life. They fell in love and were married. I love them both and I am so happy that they found each other."
"Alice and Jasper joined us on their own. They have many mysteries in their past, but their love for each other is obvious. From what I know, Alice found Jasper and showed him a better life."
Esme smiled as she reached forward and caressed one of the roses in a vase on the table.
"I love my family dearly. I will protect them with my life, and do everything possible to make them happy. They are my world."
Esme looked back at Jefferson, her gold eyes warm.
"So, do you think you can change? Can you consume only animal blood? I won't lie to you, it won't be easy. But it is a better life"

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Esme was really something else. Once Jefferson had finished his story he just gazed at the young and rather beautiful golden eyed vampire woman in front of him with just pure awh. She seemed able to spin any negative situation into something positive upbeat. This kind and gentle soul sitting next to him still had a mothers heart even though her actual heart had stopped beating long ago. She didn't eat and yet baked because it was fun and for her guests. She even went out of her way to make her strange hat wearing vampire guest more comfortable during his little mental issue. Who ever this Carlisle was he was a lucky man. "If you don't mind my saying so, you are one hell of a woman Mrs.Cullen. My wife Emma would have loved you. I'll have to give you the recipe for her blueberry and cinnamon crumpets. They go quite great with home made hot chocolate. If there is one thing I can't stand about this era it's that everything is prepackaged or comes frozen. I get that it's for convience for the busy humans but what ever happened to the heart felt home cooked fresh meal?"Jefferson went silent as Esme told him the tale of Carlisle Cullen almost single handedly creating the Cullen family by turning member after member saving their lives in some form or fashion. As Esme spoke Jefferson's dead heart began to feel heavy in his chest as he thought about the mysterious Carlisle mustering the strength to turn multiple dying humans to save their lives and form a family. It was difficult for a vampire to fight the temptation to drain someone completely just once but to do it four times? That was unheard of. Jefferson had to admit that he was a bit jealous. "Carlisle must be a strong willed person to not only turn 1 person but a total of 4 people into vampires and form a family. I'm not sure I would have that kind of restraint though I hoped I would. There is this human I met recently named Emerald Pine. I happened upon her while she was being mugged and was about to be sexually assaulted. In the heat of the moment I made the rash decision to reveal myself to her and what I was in order to save her like and innocence. She then invited me back to her home before I took her out to eat."Jefferson couldn't help but smile a bit as he recalled saving young Emerald and befriending her. Looking at her made his cold dead heart feel alive again as if he was looking at his daughter all grown up. It made him so happy that without realizing it he reached over and gave Esme's hand a light squeeze. "You should have seen her Mrs.Cullen. Despite being mugged possibly taken against her will she stayed strong and brave. I saw and still see great promise in her..as if she was my daughter all grown up. The poor woman lives in squaller all alone and I just can't allow that and so..before I left her I extended my hand in friendship and offered her a place in my home as well as to..make her one of us so that neither one of us would be alone. As a parent do you think I made the right call?"Esme Anne Cullen

~Don't be afraid to love~
Esme felt Jefferson staring at her and smiled.
I'm so glad I was able to help him. Hopefully he feels better.
Esme smiled at Jefferson's compliment. If she had been human, she would have blushed.
"Thank you, Jefferson. I appreciate the compliment. And I would have loved meeting your wife. Also, thank you for the recipe. It will be a wonderful addition to my recipes."
Esme nodded in response to his comment about Carlisle.
"Yes, Carlisle is very strong-willed. I have always admired his strength. It's what enabled him to live how he does and to resist the Volturi's attempts to get him to stay. I owe him so much. If it weren't for him, none of what I hold most dear would exist."
Esme listened to Jefferson as he told her about the events surrounding Emerald. Anger burned within her as he recounted how the monsters were attacking the poor girl, and satisfaction and admiration towards Jefferson as he described how he rescued her. She was slightly startled when Jefferson took her hand. She smiled when he commented on the fact that Emerald made him think of his daughter, and her heart went out to him.
I hope he finds some form of peace and closure with her.
Esme took both of Jefferson's hands in hers, squeezing them reassuringly.
"I believe you made a great decision. This girl needs your help, and it will do both of you good. You will both benefit from this situation. As for making her one of us, be prepared to deal with a newborn. It isn't easy. I can give you a supply of animal blood to get her started. It should help take the edge off her thirst, and start getting her accustomed to the animal blood diet. If you need help, feel free to come to me."
Esme squeezed his hands again.
"Are you going to be the one to transform her? If you are, you have to find the will to resist the urge to drink. Can you do it?"

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Jefferson couldn't help but smile a slight smile as Esme spoke of her mate..no of her husband. He felt as if he could feel her love for the man physically within him. It truly was astounding how devoted after what was possibly centuries of love and domestic bliss. It was as she was still a human after all those years of being a vampire. Jefferson had to admit that it was a bit refreshing. Jefferson just nodded his head when Esme finished speaking about her husband. "I hope one day that I can find a mate that loves me as much as you love Carlisle. He is a very lucky man to have found you."As Esme squeezed both of his hands in hers he just listened silently as the loving mother confirmed that he indeed did the right thing in revealing himself to the young woman girl and saving her. She then continued by saying that both he and Emerald would benefit from each others company which made Jefferson wonder if Esme saw him as damaged or wounded like most did but decided not to question it at least for the moment. As Esme offered up not only her services in training the newborn Emerald but also offering up some of her families animal blood stash in order to help Emerald adjust Jefferson couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. "That would be very helpful thank you. If there is anything I can do to repay your kindness then do not hesitate to ask. I was also wondering if maybe you could teach me how to cook and bake so that I can effectively feed Emerald while she's human? My wife did all of the cooking back in my human days so I never really learned."What the young looking motherly vampire asked him next sort of caught him off guard. When she asked him if he could excercise restraint in changing Emerald Jefferson's muscles tensed for a moment as he considered his answer? Would he be ready when the time came? He would have to be if he wanted to give her a better life. "I will have to be able to when the time comes. It's part of the reason I'm converting to animal blood, so I can be strong enough to give her the better life she deserves."Esme Anne Cullen

~Don't be afraid to love~
Esme smiled at Jefferson, her gold eyes sparkling.
"I know you will, Jefferson. You've been through so much darkness that there has to be nothing but good ahead of you."She looked down at the gold band on her finger."I'm just as lucky to have found him. He loves me even more."
If she could have blushed, she would have. As it was, her eyes sparkled even more.
As she watched Jefferson think about the things she had told him, Esme placed a hand on his, eyes focused on his knowingly.
"I don't see you as broken or damaged. I can guess that went through your mind. You would benefit from her presence because I don't believe anyone should be alone."
She smiled reassuringly, sunlight breaking through the clouds momentarily and falling across her face, sending millions of tiny rainbows dancing throughout the room. Soft piano music drifted into the room from elsewhere in the house. They slowly faded as raindrops once again began pattering against the windows and the grey day resumed.
As Jefferson thanked her for the offered assistance, Esme shook her head slightly.
"I am more than happy to help. I believe in helping others. I have unlimited time, so why not use my life to do good?"
She grinned as he asked for her help in learning how to cook and bake.
"I would love to! It's been a while since I had anyone to teach! I can even give you a book of my recipes to take with you. And I'll teach you how invent your own recipes!"
Esme watched as Jefferson's muscles momentarily tensed as he thought about strength of will. As he answered, Esme nodded, smiling as she felt his resolve and determination in his words.
"I know you can do it. You've got a strong heart. You've got a good life ahead of you."
