| I t was cool out, but for a change the sun was lingering beneath a light layer of cloud...rain wasn't forecast which meant bloodsuckers would steer clear of the town. Finally, a break from it all. Jacob let out a deep breath, one he'd not realised he'd been holding. He was still getting used to the changes - the pack was split...him against the world it seemed. Everything felt off, whilst it was nice to not have to take orders for a change, Jake did feel a little...dare he say it...lonely. It wasn't like he had enjoyed hearing the inner monologues of his brothers - let alone have them listening to his - but he missed the brotherhood, having them to rely on...as back up. He stared out to sea, glaring at the horizon. So many times he’d wished to be free from it all, and yet…there was now a tie that was holding him here. The only thing he’d been desperate to have. Bella. He figured he ought to thank the ancestors, but in reality he still didn’t like the fact he had this heritage thrown upon him. It wasn’t like he’d had a choice in the matter, he’d been born that way. Even now, he had to watch his temper…though with Bella in his life it was becoming a lot easier to become his old self again. His expression softened as his thoughts lingered on her. His world. Jacob smiled a little and checked the time on his cell - he was keen to see her again…even a small thing like school had him pining after her. Luckily, most of the time he was easily distracted by the coming and goings of new vampires in the area. Some were friends, some were just pain annoying. Either way, he’d promised his services to the Cullens which had meant running in circles ensuring any strange scents were checked out and any threats within the area were removed. After all, it wasn’t long before those Royal bloodsuckers chose to pay a visit…it wouldn’t be long before the news of Bella’s decision reached them. Not to mention the red-head was still no where to be found, he didn’t like that, it made him edgy. Bending over, Jacob picked up a small pebble and threw it out across the waves. It was relaxing to listen to the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore, but it wasn’t long before that noise was interrupted by the sound of footsteps. Someone was making their way over to him - he wasn’t bothered about who…as long as they didn’t want to cause a fight. Most of Sam’s pack were keeping their distance these days, but secretly he was hoping it might be Embry. As he turned on his heel to face them, Jacob frowned. It wasn’t anyone he’d been expecting…at all! It was Leah. |

Take all your chances while you can, you'll never know when they'll pass you by Sometimes people could be a little too predictable. What did the majority of the shifters do on their day off, despite the various feelings about Jake taking off from the pack? Go hang out at Emily’s. Again. Like there wasn’t a million other things any of them could be doing instead of the one thing Leah knew would likely make the situation hit harder than anything. Oh well. Although the Quileute young woman rolled her eyes to herself, she wasn’t about to let that be her problem. Not today. Besides, it wasn’t like anyone was very interested in what she thought of it all, apparently lacking fury over the split as well as the need to whine over the giant Jake-sized hole in the room. The guy didn’t die, he just won the girl he loved from a leech, made it out of the kind of torture Leah was all too familiar with that involved the one person that was wanted most being the very thing that couldn’t be had, and he was strong enough to realize that the words of Sam Uley didn’t have to be his law if he didn’t want it to be.
It was a gutsy move Leah would have found almost admirable if that hadn’t meant Jacob was on his own. Without anyone to watch his back. But she digressed.
As a light breeze blew cool air at her, she used a hand to get some of her dark hair out her face and her legs carried her to her destination. Although it wasn’t a rare day of true sunshine without even thin clouds covering up the sun constantly, Leah needed someplace to think and clear her head before she had to phase again, facing an onslaught of thoughts from Sam and the rest of his pack, so First Beach had sounded like a good place for a good walk minus drama at the time she got idea. There was always something about being near the water and on the sand that made her want to lose herself in the setting while she out towards where the water seemed to meet the sky. More often than not, when she normally got the chance to settle on a blanket there and just watch the waves crash, people interrupted. It was as much a little annoying as it was nothing to do with her actually being there, so when it seem like there was a strong possibility she could get any true alone time for once… she seized the opportunity before it was gone.
When she got there, she started at one end of the beach and slowly walked down to the other. Every so often she’d stop for a moment. Her eyes would squint and Leah would look around, her focus more on breathing than anything in her sight. Life wasn’t fair, she knew that better than many. It seemed like one minute she had a guy that she loved and who was in love her, the next he was with a girl that was the closest thing she had to a sister of all people. Leah knew it wasn’t that simple and that it really wasn’t anyone’s fault, but that didn’t make it hurt any less for better. Because while Sam’s feeling had changed more when he shifted and imprinted on Emily, hers hadn’t. Worse, she couldn’t exactly leave it alone or be away from Sam because there hadn’t be choice when she and her little brother had phased too. No real freedom, just a part of her that couldn’t help but sometimes wonder if her being a wolf too meant something was wrong with her. But with Jake going off by himself, there was another part of Leah that thought maybe there was still a small piece of hope of freedom for her.
Low and behold, the second her thoughts came back around to Jacob, there he was. Not too far off, skipping stone by the looks and sounds. She have turned around and left. Sam was doing a good job of making sure most wolves stayed clear of the guy. But he also wasn’t around to bark at her for it either and she wasn’t in wolf form so she didn’t the see the point in changing her course. What was the worst that could happen? The she was told to go away or leave? Leah shook her head to herself and blew some air out of her nose in a short, quick, nearly silent snort. If that was the case, it wouldn’t be the first nor the last time she heard it. “Relax, Lone Alpha,” she told him as she got nearer, her arms folded across her chest. “If I was here to bite, I would’ve done it by now.” Not the confidence-building best greeting of reassurance she wasn’t there to pick a fight, but that was all she had in her at the moment. She might have said she came in peace, but that one might’ve given the other wolf the urge to check if she’d been replaced by an alien.
Sorry for the ramble! >< ♡

| J acob still hadn’t really gotten used to the fact he wasn’t part of the pack anymore. Sure he had Nova hanging about – but really she was only there to get away from Sam. That girl had a tie to the Cullens that she felt compelled her to watch over them. Ha! At least she actually liked them, Jake was there only because he felt as though his hand had been forced. The way he wanted to protect Bella meant he had to work with the Cullens, whether he liked it or not. Some people might think he was admirable, but he wasn’t. Really, he was being selfish – trying to protect his own first. Could anyone blame him though? After everything, he’d finally got what he wanted. Bella was at the forefront of his mind, every moment they were apart he felt slightly anxious. Especially given her track record of getting herself injured or into trouble. He thought back to when she’d convinced him to fix up the motorbikes, and her lessons. Inwardly, he cringed. He’d done her bidding purely so that he could spend more time with her – another selfish move. Little had he known her accident-prone abilities were second to none. She knew far too much about the supernatural side of the world too – that was putting her in jeopardy every single day. He hated the fact even just being what he was put her at risk – although it was better than craving for her blood the way Edward had. Having noticed Leah in the distance, Jake felt a little pang of guilt. She was stuck with Sam – hearing his thoughts and visa versa – and there was little escape for her. The situation she’d been dragged into, Leah – Sam – Emily triangle was not much fun for anyone. At least that was something Jake had been able to relate to, although his situation had somewhat changed. Admittedly, Leah wasn’t his favourite person in the world, but then again neither was Edward, and here Jake was playing guard dog to a family of bloodsuckers. Oh how things changed. He folded his arms across his chest as she approached him – wondering why she was here rather than hanging out with the pack, Jake bashing no doubt. “Lone Alpha, I like that title,” he called back, grinning a little…although her tone was it’s usual stand-offish self, her mannerisms proved she wasn’t there to cause trouble. That was a first, usually there was some sort of argument to be had. He wondered, momentarily, if her usual attitude was down to the fact she was forced to hang around Sam…around Emily. Jake watched her as she moved closer, she was pretty enough…he actually though she was prettier that Emily if he was being completely honest. Not that it mattered to anyone, but surely there was someone out there that she could imprint on. Perhaps her guarded behaviour was the reason she hadn’t yet…after all, Bella’s heart hadn’t been open for the taking until now. Since that day, everything had changed for him. Tilting his head to one side, he scoffed. “I could beat you with my eyes closed and you know it,” Leah wasn’t exactly weak…but she wasn’t as practised as he was. “Trying to escape Sam, or are you here to spy on me…reporting back my genius plan?” It was something Sam was likely to try – spying on Jake to figure out the next move. After all, they assumed the Cullens were the threat…that just wasn’t true. Not anymore. Bella’s choice had changed not just Jake, but the fate of everyone connected with her. That meant the Cullens, Charlie and Jake. Sam wasn’t interested in that – if it involved bloodsuckers, they were out. He indicated for her to follow him to the bench-style logs that had been placed in a circle for beach bonfires. The kids from Forks were often down at the weekends, when the weather was good, making bonfires and hanging out. He was sure they’d be down later that afternoon – but for now the beach was quiet and still. Taking a seat, he glanced over at Leah – waiting for her to decide if she was going to join him or not. It wasn’t like she had another option, being alone was no fun. “Spill, what’s bothering you?” She wouldn’t have trekked all the way out to First Beach without a reason for wanting to get away. |
