our voices carry
careful words we can barely speak out loud
High school was the idea place to blend in a bit. Although she did not exactly blend in with the hot pink hair, the black, ripped leggings, the long sleeved shirt that was black and hot pink, a pair of knee high combat boots. She had a backpack that looked to be almost bursting with things, she was sitting under a tree, just reading a book for now, and she wanted to listen to people mainly, but not be a part of them. She found one could learn a lot about an area if one observed and listened, so she caught snippets of conversation here and there. Was she afraid of getting caught by the local authority? No. She had already glanced to the forest that seemed to be all around this town, she would run in there and deal with wild animals if she had to. Point of the matter was, right now, she just wanted to be left to her own devices.
If she got hungry, she could probably sneak into the school, masquerade as a student and go to the lunch room and buy her a lunch there. It would be simple, not like she hadn’t done it before in other towns and cities. She could take care of herself after all, she was sixteen yes, but sometimes she acted older than what she was, because she had to grow up impossibly fast. It had to be the most cloudy of places that she had ever been to, but that was okay with her, she did not care too much for the sun anyway, she was more a night person anyway. Although when she heard twigs snapping near her, she merely spoke in a bored voice, ”I don’t require company. Leave me the fuck alone.”
She did curse, not caring who the other person was, she was ready to run if she had to, she was prepared to snatch her bag and run, but she kept her eyes on her book for the moment, it was the Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. She slowly lifted up her head though, her eyes were bright blue, there were shadows there if one looked, showing that she had seen things that no child should see.
