Life in Volterra could get quite repetitive after a while. He adored a select few members of his given, but even they could not always bring color to his monochrome existence. He loved his role in their world, loved the power his coven had acquired over the years, but it came with a heavy price. Aside from the few missions that required the personal attention of one or all of the coven's leaders, they were shackled here in this place that shared their name. It was not wise to leave too often, knowing the Romanians and a few others still sought to take their power and positions from them.
That was one of many reasons he enjoyed acquiring new members of the guard, as well as having visitors come to their palazzo. He could get to know their homelands, places he could never visit himself for any extended period of time, through their stories as well as their thoughts.
Their newest guest to Volterra was a peace-loving soul by the name of Carlisle Cullen. Relatively new to life as a vampire, Carlisle was proving to be quite a puzzling man. While many newly turned vampires had trouble accepting their diet at first, most eventually got over their qualms, but not him. No, Carlisle had proposed a whole new diet for their kind, animal blood. It was intriguing to see the difference in his eye color after he drank from a deer, or some other woodland creature. To see that their blood so different from a human's that it caused such a drastic change was fascinating, though he and his brothers were unlikely to ever follow such a diet themselves.
Though he may like him well enough as a person, Aro knew Carlisle's presence here could also make Caius paranoid. Caius, who has no gift to speak of to help assure his position, and Carlisle, who had no gift either, but who so easily gained others' confidence and trust. If he asked the rest of their kind who they would prefer as one of their leaders, would they choose the violence-prone Caius, or the peace-loving Carlisle? Aro knew Caius was a competent leader, and his propensity for violence was often helpful when determining punishments for criminals, but those outside their coven were unlikely to see things the same way. In the eyes of the general public, a merciful leader would always trump a ruthless one. He smiled as a familiar head of blond hair came into view. "Ah Carlisle, how have you been this morning?" He asked gleefully, shoving his earlier thoughts aside for later consideration.
