| J acob had agreed to this meeting before he’d even really had a chance to think about it. It wasn’t exactly the way he’d hoped to spend the next few hours, talking to a bloodsucker he hated. Fun, right? But he had agreed to do this, for Bella. After all, he was partly responsible for the mess that was headed directly toward Forks - not that anyone knew what to expect, but it didn’t look good. Also, it meant Bella was being targeted - another no-no that was high on Jake’s list. He was going to protect her, no matter what it cost. Wandering through the streets of Port Angeles, Jacob thought over the past few weeks. Everything had been such a blur, he was still playing catch-up. He took in his surroundings, the air was damp - nothing new there - and the clouds were grey and heavy, threatening a thunder storm. Still, not that it bothered Jake all that much - running at wolf temperature was very handy these days! He had agreed to meet Edward in human form, so things were fair - though he did feel a little…exposed. Arranging to meet at the harbour where there were plenty of houses and shops nearby had been Jakes protection plan. Edward couldn’t pull any tricks with human witnesses about, although - glancing around - he noticed not too many people seemed to be about. Great. Jacob approached the wall and pulled himself up to sit facing out to sea, the breeze was cool. He breathed gently, trying to remember the promise he’d made to Bella. He was not going to lose it, not here, not now. This was to be union…kind of, working together - without killing each other. At least, not yet. He pulled out his cell and checked the time, he was only a couple of minutes early which meant the bloodsucker would no doubt be bang on time. Patiently, Jacob waited. |

I WILL NOT DIE [attr="class","itokaytext"]Edward had not wanted to meet with Jacob, but he knew that he needed at least one of the shifters on his side if they were going to protect everyone else. The Volturi were not something that he expected the Quileute tribe to be familiar with The Volturi and Edward felt like they needed to warn them. Especially since Bella was the catalyst and she had run to them. In truth, he also had no idea what she would have told them, if anything. Edward knew that Bella would not want them hurt, but in his mind, she was not thinking correctly at the time.
Reluctantly the vampire had agreed to meet the one shifter he could not stand, in an area that was considered completely neutral to the two factions. Port Angeles would be where they were meeting. It was away from both the Cullen and Quileute lands and there should not be any prying ears or eyes. He was going to be on time, mostly, and knew that Jacob would probably be early. It was such a strange situation, and he did not even care. It was the situation he found himself in currently.
Moving to sit near the shifter but not close enough that people might think they were friends, Edward sighed a moment. "She probably did not tell you what was coming did she?: There, that's the way to open up the conversation and to look like a complete idiot. At least, he had gotten it over with and didn't linger. He needed to know how much the shifter might know. Having to explain everything would be annoying but not hard. The vampire just did not feel like explaining it all.
How did he even begin? Bella knew far too much about both sides of things, without thinking about the danger to them all. Edward wanted nothing more than to protect his family. Though he may be struggling to come to terms with the fact that he lost the girl, Edward did not want to face knowing that he lost his family. Hee might go rogue who would be even more dangerous.

| I t wasn’t by choice that Jacob found himself sat on the wall waiting for the bloodsucker that had always gotten in the way. He felt like his hand had been forced, and although he was glad – no overjoyed – with Bella’s decision, it had meant the threat that loomed over all of them was greater than he ever imagined. Providing a service to the Cullens at this time not only protected them, the people of Forks and Bella…but it also protected his people. It meant there could be an agreement, something that overrode the treaty allowing him to defend against vampires on Cullen land. He caught a whiff of Edward before he actually noticed he’d arrived. Stupid stinky vampires, the scent always got into Jake’s head – usually causing him to tense up and feel on edge. Really, he should be feeling that way around Edward regardless…but today he couldn’t muster the energy. He just wanted to get the details smoothed out and move on. He rolled his eyes as Edward kept his distance, because acting that way wasn’t going to make people suspicious of the two of them. Being discreet wasn’t usually Jacob’s thing, but these were exceptional circumstances. He shifted up a bit so the gap between them wasn’t so obvious to the human eye. Jake frowned, thinking back as to what Bella had and hadn’t said. “She was vague, I got the jist of it…or at least what she thinks might happen, something about the Volturi…I’m guessing the overlords of you lot…” he paused for a moment and looked over to the bloodsucker, “it doesn’t sound good regardless.” He might have been stating the obvious but it was more to inform Edward that he understood the gravity of the situation. Thinking on it for a moment, Jake figured this was as good a time as any, “I’m sorry…you know,” he was, in all honestly. Bella had given him no indication of what her choice was. When she’d left to save him, Jake had been convinced Edward was the only one she wanted. He raised an eyebrow, knowing full well the bloodsucker next to him would pick up on all that. After all, it wasn’t a secret he could read minds. “This isn’t the time for rash decisions, I want to come to an…agreement.” Jacob turned to face him for the first time since he’d arrived. Replaying in his head the way he’d disbanded from Sams pack, now his own Alpha, would make things easier. “I want to help…I’ll work with you, and your family, to keep everyone safe.” It wasn’t just a promise, it was a fact. He wanted to do whatever it took, no questions asked. |

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] WAKE ME UP I'M LIVING A NIGHTMARE I WILL NOT DIE [attr="class","itokaytext"]Edward understood the danger facing both the shifter and the vampire. Talking about these kinds of things was dangerous, to begin with, let alone knowing that someone could hear them and get back to The Volturi about it. This particular vampire was willing to make the sacrifice. He had not expected that it would be Jacob Black that had come to talk to him, rather expecting it to be Sam Uley the alpha. Unless, of course, there was something almost poetic about it being Jacob. Edward hated the shifter with every fiber of his being but if they were going to survive and not have more carnage than normal. With a sigh, Edward closed his eyes and prepared to explain what was going on, and what they were getting into at the moment. All because Bella decided she did not want to be with him anymore.
"I can't hold you accountable for what others have done. All I can do is advise you of the situation and allow you to make your own choices. I'm sorry that Bella was vague about it all. The Volturi. Calling them our overlords are doing them a kindness. They are the governing body of all Vampires. Three old guys with far too much power. If Aro, Caius, and Marcus were not dangerous enough, they have what we call The Volturi Guard. All are vampires with extraordinary gifts and a penchant for hurting people. They were supposed to guard our secret from humans. Prevent us from making children immortal and to prevent people from finding out about us. The guard is robust and powerful, and I doubt anyone can take them on solo. You know the trouble we had with Victoria. Multiply that by a lot. See Victoria did not have power, every member of the Volturi Guard does. And not all of them are friendly."
Pausing for a moment, Edward thought about what else he could say. He knew that it should have been rare to have power, but the Volturi collected rare vampires like a child might collect baseball cards. "It was challenging to explain all the gifts and skills that these vampires have. I left to go to Italy. I knew that is where they are. In their castle up in Volterra away from the world. They collect us and use us to police the others. I sought them out when I thought Bella was dead. See, it's tough to kill a vampire, and I knew they could kill me. They didn't, Bella saved me at the cost of a deal. She has a gift that allows her to block the mental attacks that many of the guards would use. It piqued the interest of the leaders. They should have killed us. She was a human and knew our secret. They made a deal. She would become a vampire, and they would let us live."
Edward was almost sure that Bella did not explain that little caveat to him. If she remained human, the Volturi would descend upon Forks en masse, and it would be more than just the Cullen's that would be in danger. The entire human population could be wiped out if they had a mind to it. That was the fear that Edward had, and he did not know what to do about it. | J acob waited patiently – which surprised him – most days he didn’t have the patience to hear anyone out. Edward was as he remembered, cold and uncaring it seemed. The guy sat like a freakin’ statue – it was unnerving. He frowned to himself, wondering how it had been such a competition for Bella’s heart…though Bella was a magnet for all things weird, so it kind of made sense. Subconsciously, Jacob wrinkled his nose. He was trying to not let the smell of the vampire get to him, though it was hard. The sickly sweet scent burned his nose slightly – was it even possible that the two of them could work together, especially when the hate between them was so obvious? The explanation of the ‘Volturi’ guard sent a shiver down Jacob’s spine, “well they sound great,” he sighed reluctantly. It wasn’t like he hadn’t come up against a vampire before – but Laurent had been unprepared…but the Volturi – it sounded like these guys were as bad as they come. “How do we know what move they’re going to make? Is there any way to get the upper hand with them?” It may sound slightly stupid, but Jake wasn’t fully aware of the Cullens gifts…Bella had mentioned Alice’s ability to see the future, but it wasn’t always accurate. He wasn’t keen on the way Edward mentioned the Volturi having these powers…or the way he implied they used them. Inwardly he cringed, this wasn’t going to be a fair fight at all. The shifters knew how to take down a vampire, but ones with powers were going to be different. All of them – Sam included – were going to have to prepare for this. He frowned, this was going to take some convincing Sam…but if it meant keeping everyone safe, was it such a bad thing? Jacob continued to listen intently has Edward explained further what the Volturi plan to do – collecting vampires? Was that actually a real thing? Rolling his eyes dismissively, Jacob snorted. “That isn’t going to happen, she won’t become one of you,” he spat the words venomously – he didn’t like the idea that once upon a time that had even been an option. He’d watched her for months, acting like the living dead…he couldn’t imagine if it had become a reality. Edward hadn’t seen her become a shadow of herself, emotionless and reckless – not wanting to be a part of this world anymore. So much so she’d thrown herself in with a bunch of werewolves. “What do I need to do?” His voice was firm now, aggressive. He’d already disbanded from Sam – becoming his own Alpha away from the pack. He relayed this in his thoughts, knowing Edward would pick up on it. Even so, Sam would come around eventually, when he knew what the threat was, and how much it would impact everyone involved. Humans, Shifters and Vampires alike. Turning to face the bloodsucker for what seemed like the first time in a while, Jacob watched his expression. Only now he noticed the purple shadows that lie underneath his eyes, and the withdrawn, worried expression he wore in what seemed to be a constant mask. He shuddered at the thought that he could have been in that position – if Bella had chosen Edward, Jake would have been a broken man. “What does this mean for the people of Forks, for the humans?” He asked the question quietly, not really sure he wanted to know the answer. It was the packs job to protect the people of La Push, but Jake had decidedly taken the responsibility of the people of Forks onto his own shoulders…a great weight pushing down on him. |

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] WAKE ME UP I'M LIVING A NIGHTMARE I WILL NOT DIE [attr="class","itokaytext"]Edward had not wanted, nor expected to be the bearer of such bad news. Still, he could change the way things happened. Maybe that was his gift. It was not reading minds, but it was delivering horrible news and always being the odd man out. The vegetarian vampire had no idea what was going to happen next. However, he did feel a little better explaining who the threat truly was. Someone needed to understand the danger that would befall all of them now because of poor decisions. There was still not a moment that Edward did not wish he had let the Volturi end him. That, or he had agreed to join them. They did not have a mind reader, that he knew.
Closing his eyes and thinking about the questions posed by the wolf, the bronze haired vampire was careful again with his wording choices. It was not that he was hiding anything about the situation, Edward was just trying to make sure that the person he was relating the information too understood the gravity of it all. "Those in charge will listen to rational thinking. However, they've already made their decree. We might be able to get them to undo the requirement that Bella must be turned, but the chances of us fighting to the death is greater. They will do that, fight to the death I mean."
With a soft sigh, Edward wished he did not have to explain all of this. Partly due to the fact he could not stand the wet dog smell of the shifters, and partly because having to explain it meant that everything was falling apart. Not only was his family in danger but anyone that supported them, or hid or protect Isabella would be at risk as well. If an all out war broke out, there is no doubt that the death toll would be high. Maybe even astronomical compared to what the small town was used too. Forks and La Push by association could be wiped off the map. Deep inside there was a part of him that wished none of this was happening.
"I'm sure you've noticed that there are differences between the two types of vampires. My family, we prefer to subsist on a diet of animals. The Volturi and their guard will kill hundreds of people just to sate their thirst. We don't have enough people right now to protect everyone in Forks and La Push. They would come after your people for helping us, and the casualty rate would be high. I won't lie and sugar coat that for you. People will die, more than likely they will be humans. Some will be wolves, and some will be vampires. Though you and I both know our species are harder to kill. We, my family I mean, are calling in reinforcements but your side will need to band together or things will get ugly fast." There he could live with that. | J acob watched the vampire with curious eyes, his eyes were closed and his face thoughtful – it was strange. Jake thought about how easily it would be to take Edward down, in a split second everything could be different, but here he was with no desire to harm the vampire. Weird. Perhaps it was down to the fact there was something far more dangerous looming over them. Though Jacob couldn’t quite comprehend exactly how dangerous they were…he just had to take Edward’s word on it. Jake frowned for a moment, “when you say they, how many are we talking?” He felt it was a relevant question – after all, numbers were important when it came to a fair fight…and Jacob was up for a fight. He grinned a little, “would they expect the presence of wolves on your side?” He was certain they wouldn’t, but it may also give the Cullen’s the upper hand that they needed. The thoughts ran through his mind loud enough for Edward to pick up – though he knew he’d also have to say it out loud. “I’m in, whatever it takes, I’m there…” It was that simple, his loyalty would be to the Cullen’s with this – no matter what the others thought. After all, it was kind of Jake’s fault that the family were in this mess. A pang of guilt shot through him…that was a feeling he didn’t like. Surely he shouldn’t feel guilty, imprinting was a wolf thing, something he had no control over. He cringed, wondering how much of that Edward picked up – he hadn’t mentioned the imprint yet and didn’t know whether it was the right thing to do. Touchy subject and all that. Though, he guessed the wolf was out of the bag now. Listening to the explanation as it unfolded, he shook his head side to side. This didn’t sound good at all. “No one has to die, there must be a way.” The thought of not only the town being in trouble, but also the tribe – and anyone else connected – wasn’t what he wanted to hear. He had wanted to hear that there was more of a plan than that. “Please tell me you’re not honestly doubting that we can handle this – you do know the pack is growing at an obscenely fast rate,” it was true, there were kids phasing younger and younger…it was slightly unnerving. None of the tribe had expected it to be that way. “I’ll have to speak to Sam, and the elders…it won’t be pretty. But it won’t matter, you’ll have my word on this.” Jake paused for a moment thoughtfully, “Bells will probably kill me, but if it means she’s safe…” he let his words trail off. The wrath of Bella would be harder to face than the pack and the elders put together. He didn’t want to hurt her that way, but he had a duty to protect her. “Sorry, that’s not fair on you,” he mumbled, suddenly aware of the bloodsucker next to him that could easily snap and attack in less than a blink of an eye. |
